Insulin pen market development is unstoppable
Since we first entered the campus, we have been exposed to all kinds of pens for writing, including pencils, ballpoint pens, pens, etc; It is believed that we are no strangers to these pens, and there is a very ingenious connection and combination between the two objects that seem to be completely different from the insulin injection pen that is now widely used in medicine. This pen type syringe containing insulin solution is the first medical instrument of "pen for injection".
Insulin pen syringe (insulin pen for short) is usually composed of three parts, namely, pen body, needle and drug bin. The pen body is composed of a detachable cap and a pen holder. The medicine bin, also known as the pen core, stores the insulin solution. When insulin is injected, a disposable needle is used for hygiene and safety. Compared with the glass pen syringe, the insulin pen is safer, more convenient, and has more accurate and controllable dosage. Therefore, the product was warmly welcomed by many patients with diabetes as soon as it was launched, and its sales increased year by year.
Due to various advantages of insulin pen, it has achieved considerable and steady development in some countries. According to the latest report of foreign medical information media, at present, about 80% of diabetic patients in Europe use insulin pens to control blood sugar, and about 75% of diabetic patients in Japan use insulin pens. China and India also have many diabetics who often use insulin pens. However, in the United States, because the insulin pen has not been included in the reimbursement scope of the national medical insurance, the use rate of insulin pen in the United States is only 3% (note: according to the statistics of the United States Department of Health, there are about 21 million diabetics in this country). It can be seen from the above statistics that the prevalence of insulin pens in the United States is far lower than that in Europe and Japan.
At present, there are at least a dozen brands of insulin pens on the international market, which can be generally divided into two categories, namely insulin pens that can be used for multiple injections and insulin pens that can be pre filled. The biggest difference between the two is that they can be used for multiple injections. The former belongs to reusable products, while the latter belongs to disposable products.
The rapid development of the insulin pen market has accelerated the creation and production of a new batch of insulin pens.
YpsomedAG, a Swiss medical device company, recently announced that it had invented a new disposable injection pen. The pen is made of cheap polypropylene (PP) material and contains a liquid medicine that can be used once. The needle head is a retractable thin needle, and the patient has less pain during injection. Because it can only be used once, this cheap injection pen can avoid the occurrence of infection to the greatest extent.
China Wanhai Medical Equipment Co., Ltd. recently developed and marketed a new pen type syringe, which can separate powdered drugs from water for injection, greatly improve the shelf life, reduce the injection process, and improve the injection precision. The patient can turn the freeze-dried insulin powder into liquid and inject it under the skin by gently pushing the button at the end of the pen. This product has many uses. In addition to insulin injection, it is also suitable for injection of polypeptide drugs such as GLP-1, asparagus, glycogen, liraglutide, and other bioengineering drugs.
Lilly is also developing its own multi-purpose pen injectors. Medical experts believe that in the future, common diseases such as osteoporosis drugs (such as salmon calcitonin), multiple sclerosis drugs (such as - 2b interferon), anemia drugs (such as the eighth clotting factor) and rheumatoid arthritis can be treated at home with pen injectors, so as to reduce the pressure of hospital outpatient. Because of the use of reusable internal medicine bags, patients can inject drugs for themselves at any time and avoid the trouble of going to the hospital for injection as long as they buy several medicine bags (refills) at a time and put them in the small and medium-sized refrigerator at home for refrigeration.
In fact, many bioengineering drugs are proteins or peptides, which can only be injected with freeze-dried powder reconstituted solution. The introduction of low-cost disposable pre filled injection pens paves the way for the promotion and use of new bioengineering drugs. Because it is much easier to process pre filled disposable injection pens in batches in pharmaceutical factories than traditional freeze-dried powder packed in glass ampoules and recovered with solution, and it can greatly reduce the outpatient workload in hospitals. In the future, patients with some chronic diseases, including tumor, rheumatoid arthritis, anemia, osteoporosis, viral hepatitis, psoriasis, lupus erythematosus, can use disposable pre filled injection pens at home. Since the pre filled disposable injection pen has accurately calculated the dosage in advance, it is very safe for patients to inject themselves at home. There is no risk of overdose. At the same time, patients can also save the trouble of queuing for registration and injection in the hospital.
In the future, with the rapid development and popularization of modern technology, it is believed that the international medical device industry will develop more injection pens that are convenient for patients. It is understood that since China introduced insulin pens from Europe 10 years ago, the market sales of insulin pens have increased year by year, and domestic insulin pens have also been developed and listed. With the rapid increase of national income, it is believed that all kinds of new injection pens developed abroad will have broad market prospects in China.
